Stem Cell Therapy

Commonly referred to as regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy is a promising treatment that uses the body’s internal repair system by taking stem cells from fatty tissue or bone marrow and placing them in the damaged or diseased area of the body. This process prompts the body to regenerate and repair damaged tissues with healthy cells.

The risk for adverse reactions or infections is extremely low because the stem cells are taken directly from your pet’s body. Depending on the case, stem cells can adapt into blood vessels, bone, cartilage, ligaments, fat, muscles, nerves, and tendon tissue.

Stem cell therapy can be useful in the treatment of:

  • Osteoarthritis, most common
  • Bone, spinal cord, and ligament injury repair
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Some forms of heart disease
  • Inflammatory diseases of the skin and stomach

At Highlands-Eldorado Veterinary Hospital, we’ve seen tremendous improvements in pets suffering from osteoarthritis in particular. In fact, more than 80% of dogs with arthritis have an improved quality of life thanks to developments in stem cell therapy. If you think your pet may be a good candidate for stem cell therapy, we highly encourage you to start a discussion with your veterinarian.
